Westwood Labs Names Stephen Collins Director of Quality & Regulatory Affairs

AZUSA, CA (For Immediate Release) — Westwood Laboratories Inc., a contract manufacturer of personal care and green products, has named Stephen Collins as Director of Quality & Regulatory Affairs.  In his new position, Collins will manage and direct all aspects of quality and regulatory functions for the Azusa-based company, which specializes in liquids, creams and gels for hair and skin care and bath/shower products.  His responsibilities will include managing internal quality investigations and implementing corrective and preventative quality plans, as well as insuring that the company remains in compliance with state, federal and international regulations.

Described by Westwood Laboratories president Tony de Vos as “a perfect fit with our company’s passion for excellence,” Collins brings over 25 years’ experience in Quality Assurance, Quality Control and Research & Development for a diversified mix of corporations in the pharmaceutical, personal care, medical and dietary supplement industries. A talented chemist with extensive laboratory analysis and instrumentation knowledge, he is also a skilled “take charge” personnel manager and an expert in regulatory/environmental/health/safety compliance.

Most recently, Collins served as Senior Director of Technical Services for Persōn & Covey Inc. (Glendale,CA), where in addition to being responsible for corporate quality assurance/control, he directed the Research & Development department, launching innovative pharmaceutical and over-the-counter products that were distributed to physicians and health care facilities worldwide.  Prior to that, Collins managed the quality control of medical diagnostic products for Quantimetrix Corp. (Redondo Beach,CA), whose customers include the Mayo Clinic, Roche, and Centers for Disease Control.

“Stephen not only possesses great scientific and technical knowledge, he is also a hands-on manager and has a big-picture view of what it takes to succeed in today’s competitive and highly regulatory manufacturing climate,” said de Vos.  “His multi-level skills will be a tremendous advantage to Westwood as we move forward in this challenging 21st century environment.”

In recent years, Westwood has taken some ground-breaking initiatives to “move forward” as an innovator, not only in its products, but in the way they’re manufactured.  In 2009, the company became the first manufacturer in its city to convert to solar power, removing itself entirely from the power grid.

Westwood’s forward thinking management team is one of the things that makes him so excited about coming to work for the company, said Collins.  “One characteristic quality that influenced my decision to join Westwood was the owner and other management members,” he said. “Tony de Vos represents a continuous positive flow of energy that is very infectious and great to be around.”

Collins believes that his background makes him ideal for the position.  “I am a good fit for Westwood because I have an extensive amount of experience with OTC and cosmetic products in organizations of similar size and structure,” said Collins.  “Additionally, I have experience with veterinary product manufacturing.  I am excited about the challenges ahead in achieving and maintaining a top-level quality program at Westwood.”

Collins earned a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technologies and a master’s degree in Chemistry fromArizonaStateUniversity.  He has also completed numerous specialized certification programs in his field and holds the following designations: ASQ Certified Quality Auditor, Licensed Designee for Drug Manufacture Wholesale, Licensed Laboratory Technologist, Implementing ISO-9000, GMP Implementation in a Pharmaceutical Environment, Total Quality Management Certification, and Statistical Process Control Certification. Additionally, he is a member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemistry, American Society of Quality (ASQ), International Society of Six Sigma Professionals, and American Association for the Advancement of Science.
