Major Investment Reflects Hagen’s Commitment to Canadian-made Food and Treats for Pets

February 16, 2012

MONTREAL, Canada, February 5, 2012 (For Immediate Release) – Rolf C. Hagen Inc. today announced that it has made a substantial investment to expand its pet food manufacturing capability at Hagen Industries Ltd. in Montreal.

The multi-million dollar investment, used to acquire and install a new food extruder, represents a major commitment to the research, development and manufacturing of Made-in-Canada food for companion birds and small animals, as well as treats for dogs and cats.

“This investment underscores our company’s strong support for, and commitment to, local and regional communities in Canada, where we have been manufacturing quality pet products for consumers all over the world for 56 years. It also further strengthens our position as a leading maker of high quality pet food and treats that pet owners have trusted for decades,” said Rolf Hagen Jr, President and CEO of Rolf C. Hagen Inc.

The new food extruder is part of an enormous food-processing system that wends its way through Hagen Industries’ sprawling Ville St-Laurent plant.

The massive machinery includes many processing stations interconnected by conduits and conveyors that move ingredients through a complex food-making procedure.

The mixing station has a combination of 26 silos and bins where grains, such as seeds and corn, are stored. The extrusion process consists of cooking the ingredients under pressure into a soft dough which then passes through dies that create various shapes and textures.

“It is a great time for our Montreal factory, as this new processing equipment will allow us to develop new markets with numerous innovative products. We will prioritize the use of Canadian ingredients, which are known for their high quality standards, to guarantee high levels of nutrition and freshness for the benefit of pet health and consumer satisfaction. Hagen Industries definitely continues its development on a solid basis,” said Yvan Giguère, General Manager at Hagen Industries Ltd.

As always, all Hagen brand foods and treats made at Hagen Industries are scientifically developed and undergo rigorous field-testing at the venerable Hagen Avicultural Research Institute (HARI), which has been dedicated to the research and development of nutritionally advanced pet food for over 25 years.

We would like to acknowledge the support of Quebec’s Ministère du Développement économique, de l’Innovation et de l’Exportation as well as le Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation.

When fully operational, Hagen Industries Ltd. will manufacture leading, high quality Hagen brand foods for birds and small animals (Tropican, Tropimix, and Living World brands), as well as treats for dogs and cats (Nutrience brand) for national and global distribution.
